Hyundai Mobis has developed a 160kW Power Electric system for general EV models, giving the Korean supplier a broader electric drive line-up as carmakers push out more battery-powered vehicles across different price bands.

The new PE system follows Hyundai Mobis’ earlier 250kW high-performance unit. A smaller 120kW version for compact cars and small mobility vehicles is also due to be completed in the first half of 2026, which would give the company drive systems for everything from entry-level EVs to faster, higher-output models.

A PE system is essentially the EV equivalent of an internal combustion powertrain. It combines the motor, inverter and reduction gear, so it is one of the most important component sets in an electric vehicle.

This latest development is significant because Hyundai Mobis said it is no longer just building PE systems to customer orders. It has now developed its own design technology for the main components, allowing it to pitch complete drive modules to global carmakers.

The company has focused on standardising and modularising key parts, including the drive motor stator, inverter and power module. That gives the 160kW system a platform-like structure, meaning it can be adapted across different vehicle types instead of being redesigned from scratch for every model.

The numbers are fairly useful too. Hyundai Mobis said the 160kW unit is equal to about 215hp, enough for many mass-production EVs. Install one motor on each axle and total output can be doubled for all-wheel-drive applications.

Despite being developed as a more universal system, it is not just a cost play. Hyundai Mobis said specific power is up by about 16%, while overall system volume has been cut by nearly 20%.

The company credits modular design, standardised parts, new motor cooling technology and a power module using efficiency-focused semiconductors.

Hyundai Mobis said some overseas customers have already shown interest. That is important for the supplier, which has already won global orders for battery systems.

With its own PE system family, it now has a stronger case in the EV powertrain business, not just battery supply.
