The Malaysian Institute of Road Safety Research (Miros) has begun a three-month trial of minimum-speed advisories on selected sections of the PLUS and South Klang Valley Expressway (SKVE).

The proof-of-concept programme started on Aug 1.

Developed with the Malaysian Highway Authority, the system recommends a minimum travelling speed for each lane.

Miros wants drivers to use lanes suited to their pace, reducing lane hogging, large speed differences and risky overtaking from the left.

The trial covers three stretches: PLUS E1 northbound between Tanjung Malim and Behrang, SKVE E26 from the Ayer Hitam toll plaza to Bandar Saujana Putra, and PLUS E2 northbound between Bandar Ainsdale and Nilai.

On two-lane roads, the advised minimums are 60kph for the left lane and 80kph for the right. Three-lane sections use 60, 80 and 100kph from left to right. Four-lane roads use 60, 60, 80 and 100kph. Heavy vehicles should remain on the left.

The figures are advisory, not compulsory. Motorists will not be fined for travelling below them and should slow down when traffic, weather, visibility or road conditions require it.

Existing maximum speed limits remain in force. Miros will use the trial to assess whether the system should be extended.
