BMW iX5 Long Wheelbase coming to China in 2027 with over 1,000km CLTC range

BMW will launch a China-specific long-wheelbase iX5 in 2027, giving the X5 line its first regular-production battery-electric model.

The company claims more than 1,000 km of range under the China Light-Duty Vehicle Test Cycle (800km WLTP estimate).

The iX5 will be sold beside a new petrol-powered X5 developed for China.

These are separate market-specific models, not merely equipment packages added to the international X5 range. Their dimensions and equipment were developed around local expectations rather than carried over unchanged.

Both use a 3,165 mm wheelbase, 130 mm longer than X5 variants sold elsewhere.

Most of that extra length benefits the rear cabin, giving passengers more legroom and making the iX5 better suited to buyers who frequently use the back seats. Adaptive two-axle air suspension is standard.

BMW has not disclosed the Chinese iX5’s battery capacity, charging speed or motor output. It has confirmed sixth-generation eDrive technology and a new high-voltage battery layout.

The wider global iX5 programme provides some context, but the figures are not yet confirmed for China.

Development versions of the iX5 60 xDrive use an 800-volt electrical system, two electric motors and all-wheel drive, producing up to 425 kW.

The global prototype also carries BMW’s largest electric-car battery so far, with 141 kWh of usable capacity in European specification.

China gets its own exterior treatment. The iX5 uses diagonal front light signatures, with an optional double-X pattern. Extra light strips extend towards the illuminated kidney grille and take part in the welcome and farewell sequences.

The cabin gives rear passengers priority. BMW has developed new front-passenger and rear seats, while slate and glass trim join a restrained single-colour interior scheme. A three-dimensional backlit strip provides the ambient lighting.

BMW Panoramic iDrive runs Operating System X and combines Panoramic Vision with a floating, free-form central display. A separate passenger screen is also available.

In the rear, the latest BMW Theatre Screen supports 8K streaming, gaming, video calls and mobile work.

The 31.3-inch roof-mounted display is a China-market advantage. The standard-wheelbase X5 and iX5 sold elsewhere will not receive the Theatre Screen, leaving overseas rear passengers without the large 8K display.

Driver assistance has been tuned for Chinese roads with Momenta.

Locally trained end-to-end artificial intelligence supports an Address-to-Address system guided by navigation. It works with BMW’s Heart of Joy computer, which coordinates drivetrain and chassis functions.

The petrol X5 shares the stretched body, standard air suspension, cabin technology and China-specific design, although its engine range has yet to be detailed.

BMW has also withheld prices and final variant information pending official launch in 2027.
