Volvo Car Malaysia has switched the EX90 to local assembly while giving its flagship electric SUV a substantial electrical and performance upgrade.
The updated seven-seat EX90 is assembled at Volvo’s Shah Alam plant and costs RM428,888 on the road without insurance, RM14,000 less than the outgoing RM442,888 fully imported model.
Its biggest change is the move from a 400V to 800V electrical architecture. Maximum DC charging rises from 250kW to 350kW, cutting the claimed 10-80% charging time from 30 minutes to 22 minutes. Volvo says up to 250km of range can be added in 10 minutes under suitable conditions.
The Twin Motor Performance powertrain now produces 500kW, or 680hp, and 870Nm, compared with 380kW and 910Nm previously. The 0-100kph time falls from 4.9 to 4.2 seconds.
Battery capacity is reduced from 111kWh nominal to 106kWh, with WLTP range dipping slightly from 623km to 617km. AC charging remains at 11kW.
Computing power also gets a major lift. The EX90 adopts a dual NVIDIA Drive AGX Orin core computer capable of 500 trillion operations per second, supporting updated safety, collision-avoidance and driver-assistance functions as well as future over-the-air improvements. An electrochromic panoramic roof is also fitted.
The Malaysian CKD model no longer carries the prominent roof-mounted lidar sensor found on the earlier imported EX90, according to launch-day reports. Other driver-assistance hardware and functions remain, including Pilot Assist, blind-spot monitoring, autonomous emergency braking and Park Pilot Assist.
The ES90, meanwhile, moves to model year 2027 only months after its Malaysian introduction. It remains locally assembled and retains its RM339,888 price and Single Motor Extended Range configuration.
Output remains at 245kW and 480Nm, supplied by a 92kWh battery. Volvo’s updated Malaysian overview quotes 662km WLTP, 11km more than before, while maximum DC charging remains 350kW with a 22-minute 10-80% time.
The ES90 also gets smaller 21-inch wheels, new Mulberry Red and Aurora Silver paint options, Cardamom cabin trim and wireless Android Auto. Launch-day specifications also list Nappa leather replacing the previous Nordico upholstery.
For the EX90, the first 100 customers receive a RM25,000 rebate and a Volvo wallbox worth RM3,990. The ES90 is being offered with a rebate of up to RM17,600, together with the wallbox.
