Tesla Malaysia starts charging RM0.88/kWh at Destination Chargers

The free-charging gravy train is over for Tesla owners in Malaysia. Its AC chargers called “Destination Chargers” now cost RM0.88 per kWh, ending the complimentary access offered since the network began rolling out in late 2023.

Tesla Malaysia did not issue a public announcement. The tariff instead appeared in the Tesla app, which shows the charging price for each location.

The quiet switch follows a familiar pattern. Earlier in July, Tesla raised Model 3 and Model Y prices by RM1,400 to RM3,000, with the revised figures appearing on its online configurator rather than through a formal announcement.

Tesla’s Malaysian Destination Charging network comprises about 75 connectors across 18 locations. Most deliver up to 11 kW of alternating-current power and are intended for cars parked for several hours.

Parking charges imposed by property operators remain separate from the electricity bill.

The new tariff is still near the lower end of Malaysia’s public AC charging market, where rates commonly range from around RM0.90 to RM1.15 per kWh.

Destination Chargers remain restricted to Tesla vehicles.

Malaysia does not regulate the prices charged at public AC or DC chargers, leaving operators to set their own rates.  The Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry said the approach is intended to encourage private investment and competition. In practice, operators that charge substantially more than rivals risk pricing themselves out of the market.

The government and Energy Commission must nevertheless keep the sector under watch as charging networks expand, particularly for signs of coordinated pricing or cartel behaviour that could weaken competition and leave drivers with little real choice.
