Changan Automobile has begun operations at its first overseas new energy vehicle (NEV) plant in Rayong, Thailand.
The opening today marked the rollout of the company’s 28,590,000th vehicle, a right-hand drive Deepal S05, signifying Changan’s transition from a product exporter to a global manufacturer with localised operations.
The event coincided with the 50th anniversary of China-Thailand diplomatic relations and was attended by Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra, who met with Changan chairman Zhu Huarong and expressed support for the company’s localisation and industrial development initiatives.
The new factory spans around 960,000 square metres and has an initial annual production capacity of 100,000 vehicles, with plans to double that by 2027.
The facility aims to support Thailand’s automotive supply chain, generate 30,000 jobs, and contribute to local tax revenue.
With an emphasis on green and digital manufacturing, the Rayong plant features photovoltaic energy, rainwater recycling, recirculated air systems, virtual simulations, and integrated digital platforms to improve efficiency and minimise environmental impact.
Changan plans to position the country as a regional hub for Southeast Asia, Australia, and New Zealand.
The company targets over 5 million global vehicle sales and 3 million NEV sales by 2030. In the next three years, Changan will launch 12 new energy models and expand its AI and driver-assistance technology offerings.
A new global right-hand drive parts hub has also been formed in Rayong, aiming for a 98% satisfaction rate and 24-hour delivery service.
This will be complemented by an upgraded digital service platform offering AI-based features such as smart control, remote diagnostics, battery monitoring, and predictive maintenance.
Changan’s overseas growth supports its broader transformation strategy launched in 2017, which includes the Green Plan, Intelligent Plan, and Vast Ocean Plan.
In 2024, the company recorded 2.684 million global sales, a 5.1% year-on-year increase, including 735,000 NEVs, up 52.8%.
