Audi has put the E5 Sportback on sale, making electrochromic (EC) smart-dimming sunroofs standard on higher-spec variants.
The move advances Audi’s EV strategy and signals wider uptake of EC glazing in premium cars.
Developed by Ambilight, the panoramic EC roof spans 2.002 m² and offers five brightness levels.
Audi said the system blocks 99.99% of UV and 99.5% of harsh light, improving cabin comfort and thermal control, which can aid driving range by cutting cooling demand.
EC roofs were once a novelty — seen in 2005 on Ferrari’s Superamerica — but Ambilight’s in-house technology has matured since 2017 into volume production.
It already appears on models from BYD, NIO, Zeekr and Avatr. With Audi adopting the feature, EC dimming moves further into the luxury mainstream as buyers seek expansive glass areas without heat build-up or glare.
Audi positions the EC roof as part of a broader push to enhance efficiency and perceived quality in its electric line-up. Ambilight says demand is now driven as much by consumer expectations as by early-adopter carmakers, and it plans continued scaling to meet premium brand requirements.
The E5 Sportback’s EC sunroof is fitted as standard on top trims, with lower variants expected to offer it as an option depending on market specifications.
