Mercedes-Benz has unveiled the new GLA with three battery-electric variants, up to 657km of WLTP range and 320kW DC charging.

German orders opened on July 30, with market launch scheduled for November. Prices start in Germany at €48,599.60 including VAT for the GLA 200 electric (about RM228,100).

The entry model uses a 58kWh lithium iron phosphate battery and a 165kW motor. Above it sits the 200kW GLA 250+ electric, while the GLA 350 4Matic electric produces 260kW and completes the 0-100kph run in 5.4 seconds. Both higher-output versions use an 85kWh nickel-manganese-cobalt battery.

Mercedes-Benz said its 800-volt electrical architecture allows the GLA to add up to 270km of WLTP range in 10 minutes. Maximum DC power is 320kW. AC charging is 11kW standard or 22kW optionally. An optional converter allows the car to use 400-volt charging stations.

The GLA sits 20mm lower than its predecessor, although its wheelbase grows by 61mm to 2,790mm. Rear legroom increases by 38mm and maximum rear headroom rises by 24mm.

The electric model’s closed grille contains 608 backlit points, with an illuminated surround available depending on specification and local regulations.

Wheel sizes run from 18 to 20 inches. Mercedes-Benz has also widened the rear track and pushed the wheels farther towards the body edges.

Boot capacity expands by 70 litres to 410 litres, or 1,400 litres with the rear seats folded. Electric versions also gain a 107-litre front storage compartment. Four-wheel-drive models can tow up to two tonnes with a braked trailer.

Inside, the optional MBUX Superscreen combines a 10.25-inch instrument panel with 14-inch central and front-passenger displays beneath one glass surface. Mercedes-Benz has added physical roller and rocker controls to the steering wheel for volume, the speed limiter and Distronic.

The MBUX Virtual Assistant draws on ChatGPT, Microsoft Bing and Google Gemini, while navigation is based on Google Maps. Driver-assistance hardware includes eight cameras, five radar sensors and 12 ultrasonic sensors.

A new Sky Control panoramic roof can switch seven glass sections between clear and opaque, while 172 illuminated stars are embedded in the panel.

Mercedes-Benz will add 48-volt petrol hybrids in early 2027. These use a new turbocharged 1.5-litre engine, a 22kW electric motor and an eight-speed dual-clutch transmission.

A further electric model with a 71kWh battery is also due that year. Equipment details will vary by market and by version when sales begin.
