Mercedes-Benz will unveil its all-new electric GLC with EQ Technology at the IAA Mobility show in Munich on Sept 7, marking the first production model to feature an elevated iteration of its Sensual Purity design philosophy.

A centrepiece of this next-generation styling is the newly conceived “iconic grille”, which combines a wide chromed surround with a smoked-glass-effect lattice and integrated contour lighting to replace the traditional chrome bar array.

For more than a century, the chrome grille has served as a visual signature on Mercedes-Benz models, from the vertical-slatted front of the 1960s W 100 Pullman to the horizontal architectures of later S-Class series.

The new grille retains this heritage DNA while embracing modern minimalism and technology. An optional illuminated version employs 942 backlit pixels behind the lattice, capable of simple animations, and features an illuminated central star and perimeter contour.

Mercedes-Benz Group chief design officer Gorden Wagener said the new grille “redefines the face of our brand”, fusing enduring design codes with future-focused execution to ensure instant recognition. He added that this treatment is “the perfect fusion of lasting design codes reinterpreted for the future”.

Beneath its fresh exterior, the new GLC remains the brand’s best-selling model in the midsize segment, now powered exclusively by electric drive systems.

It introduces MB.OS, the manufacturer’s next-generation software platform, which governs vehicle functions, connected-car services and enhanced user interfaces.

The GLC’s electric powertrain and software integration aim to combine Mercedes-Benz’s established reputation for reliability and refinement with zero-emission performance.

Inside, the cabin benefits from the seamless MBUX Hyperscreen, that boasts a sweeping glass panel that unites digital gauge cluster, infotainment touchscreens and passenger display under a single surface.

Mercedes-Benz describes the arrangement as delivering a “Welcome Home” ambience, emphasising comfort, intuitive operation and a sense of belonging for occupants.

The electric GLC’s broader package includes advanced driver-assist features, connected navigation with real-time updates and over-the-air software upgrades.

Mercedes-Benz anticipates that the combination of its reimagined “iconic grille”, pioneering interior technology and electric powertrain will set a new benchmark in the midsize SUV category.
