Gentari and BYD Malaysia have signed an agreement to explore deploying BYD’s ultra-fast Flash Charging technology along major intercity routes.
The memorandum of understanding (MoU) was signed in Shenzhen, China, on Wednesday by Gentari group CEO Sushil Purohit and BYD Malaysia managing director Jacob Ma.
BYD’s Flash Charging system delivers up to 1,500kW (1.5MW), potentially adding 400km of driving range in five minutes for compatible vehicles under optimal conditions.
Vehicles equipped with BYD’s second-generation Blade Battery technology can charge from 10% to 70% in five minutes, or reach 97% in nine minutes.
The collaboration will examine suitable locations along intercity corridors connecting major population centres, together with power infrastructure, battery energy storage systems (BESS) and commercial viability.
BESS can store electricity from the grid and supply high-power bursts during charging, reducing peak grid demand.
The companies will also explore cooperation in renewable energy generation and energy storage.
Purohit said reliable power, convenient locations and dependable operations were just as important as charging speed in encouraging EV adoption.
Meanwhile, installation work on BYD Flash Charging facilities are already known to be under way at Denza Balakong and Glenmarie dealerships in Selangor.
Gentari, a wholly owned Petronas subsidiary, currently operates more than 600 EV charging points in Malaysia.
