Proton is expanding its role as a manufacturing and export base for Chinese partner Geely, assembling selected models for overseas markets at its Tanjong Malim plant in Perak.
The arrangement has helped lift Proton’s combined exports to 7,370 vehicles in the first nine months of 2026, surpassing the 6,000 units recorded throughout 2025.
Proton said Geely-branded vehicles accounted for most of the increase, although it did not provide separate export figures for the two brands.
Producing vehicles for different markets also exposes Proton’s workforce to varying regulatory requirements and quality standards, while creating business opportunities for Malaysian component suppliers.
The consolidated Tanjong Malim manufacturing complex has an annual production capacity of 250,000 vehicles, supported by stamping, body assembly, paint and final assembly facilities.
Its Advanced Powertrain Hub produces engines and transmission components, including dedicated hybrid transmissions and electric drive units.
Proton deputy chief executive officer Abdul Rashid Musa said the international production programmes would improve the utilisation of existing manufacturing investments while strengthening workforce expertise, quality standards and supplier capabilities.
The expansion supports the development of the Automotive High-Tech Valley (AHTV), where Proton has relocated its research and engineering operations.
A new logistics hub has also been completed but is not yet operational, while further research and development activities are planned in collaboration with the Malaysia Automotive, Robotics and IoT Institute (MARii).
Proton has consolidated manufacturing at Tanjong Malim, including transferring around 1,400 employees from Shah Alam.
