Volvo Car Malaysia today introduced its first fully electric seven-seater SUV, the EX90 Ultra Twin, marking a significant leap in electric mobility with an uncompromising focus on safety and technological innovation.

The EX90 is replete with firsts for the Swedish marque . It is the first Volvo equipped with a lidar sensor, fully software-driven systems and built from the outset to embrace unsupervised driving as autonomous technology evolves.

Designed with a uniquely Scandinavian aesthetic, the vehicle combines a sleek, rounded front, flush glazing and integrated door handles to achieve an impressive drag coefficient of 0.29, all while retaining its road presence.

An all-wheel drive system powers the EX90 Ultra Twin with a peak output of 380 kW (517 hp) and 910Nm of torque, enabling it to accelerate from a standstill to 100kph in just 4.9 seconds.

Power is delivered through a 111 kWh lithium-ion nickel-rich NMC battery featuring 107 kWh usable capacity, offering a WLTP range of up to 623 km and rapid charging from 10 to 80 percent within 30 minutes.

Volvo has integrated a comprehensive suite of safety innovations under its Safe Space Technology umbrella.

This includes automatic braking, steering and lane-keeping aids that operate in real time, bolstered by an advanced suite of sensors and cameras that allow the EX90 to scan its environment in 360 degrees.

New features such as Pilot Assist now incorporate a lane change function, while Driver Understanding and Occupant Sensing systems monitor driver alertness and cabin activity to mitigate risks.

The latter employs innovative measures to ensure that no child or pet is inadvertently left behind when the vehicle is locked, alerting the driver via visual and audio signals if movement is detected.

Inside, the EX90 is styled to evoke the ambience of a Scandinavian living room, featuring recycled, natural and renewable materials.

Passengers enjoy a quiet cabin environment enhanced by double-laminated glass, vibration-absorbing chassis and refined sound insulation that perfectly complement the high fidelity audio system provided by Bowers & Wilkins.

Technological enhancements such as a digital phone key, sun-like interior LED lighting and high-definition pixel headlights further elevate the driving experience.

Orders for the EX90 has begun at a recommended retail price of RM442,888 (on-the-road without insurance) for Peninsular Malaysia and slightly less in East Malaysia, with early customers benefiting from complimentary charging wallbox vouchers and additional perks.

Updated XC90 in two versions

In parallel, Volvo has also refreshed its iconic XC90, bolstering its blend of traditional Scandinavian design with modern technology and efficiency upgrades.

The updated XC90 retains its revered seven-seater practicality while incorporating a refined exterior design and a redesigned interior with a larger central display.

Powertrain options include the T8 plug-in hybrid (PHEV) with a combined output of 462hp and the B5 mild hybrid variant that offers respectable performance of 263hp, with the T8 achieving a 0–100kph sprint in 5.3 seconds and the B5 managing it in 7.7 seconds. The petrol engine in both cases is a 2.0-litre, four-cylinder mill.

Price-wise, the PHEV is RM434,888; the B5 mild hybrid is RM418,888.

Both variants benefit from an Ultra trim that brings premium touches such as a head-up display, next-generation Pilot Assist, and advanced connectivity features.

The cabin of the new XC90 has been reimagined for enhanced convenience and comfort, featuring upgraded sound insulation, a more spacious dashboard and improved storage solutions.

Drivers are treated to an immersive infotainment system with a free-standing 11.2-inch central screen that offers intuitive access to maps, media and a contextual user interface that adapts to driving conditions.

Safety remains paramount, with Volvo’s active and passive technologies ensuring that the refreshed XC90 continues its legacy as one of the safest vehicles on the road.

Both the EX90 and XC90 come with extensive aftersales packages including five years of digital services, 24-hour roadside assistance, unlimited mileage warranties, and an eight-year warranty on high-voltage batteries.

The XC90 is already locally assembled, while the EX90 will follow the same route later this year. Meanwhile, it is shipped in from Volvo’s plant in China.
