Malaysia’s new Belfield Tunnel is now operational, offering a streamlined route for visitors entering Menara Merdeka 118 in Kuala Lumpur.
The tunnel, spanning just over one kilometre, is designed solely for vehicles travelling to and from the iconic skyscraper, easing congestion on major city roads.
Built by PNB Merdeka Ventures Sdn Berhad, a subsidiary of Permodalan Nasional Berhad, it represents Malaysia’s second two-storey tunnel. The first one was the 9.7km long Smart tunnel also in Kuala Lumpur that was opened in 2007,
The tunnel provides an alternate entry and exit route to the tower, directing vehicles into basement car park 4 via Jalan Syed Putra and Jalan Damansara.
Departing vehicles use basement car park 5, with designated exits onto Jalan Syed Putra and Jalan Istana, thus improving overall traffic flow within the city centre.
Menara Merdeka 118, the world’s second-tallest tower, also boasts parking facilities capable of accommodating up to 8,000 cars.
In addition to serving the tower’s visitors, the Belfield Tunnel will benefit guests bound for Malaysia’s sole Park Hyatt Kuala Lumpur hotel and the 118 Mall, scheduled to open in the second quarters of 2025 and 2026 respectively.
PNB Merdeka Venture CEO Datuk Tengku Abdul Aziz Tengku Mahmud said the tunnel’s opening is expected to enhance the experience for business professionals, shoppers and tourists alike.
