Volvo Car Malaysia is set to introduce a new user interface later this year for all models built from 2020 onwards that use an Android operating system.

The upgrade aims to align the digital experience with that of the company’s next-generation fully electric vehicles.

Meanwhile, the local arm concluded 2024 on a strong note, with fully electric battery electric vehicles (BEVs) accounting for 30 per cent of total retail sales, an 18 per cent increase compared to 2023.

Additionally, BEV and plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) models comprised 83 per cent of overall retail sales this year, up from 71 per cent previously.

This performance marks a significant milestone in Volvo’s global sustainability ambition to sell 90 to 100 per cent electrified vehicles—defined as those equipped with plug-in, high-voltage battery drivetrains — by 2030.

Since 2020, Volvo Car Malaysia has led the market by exclusively offering new cars in fully electric or hybrid electric variants, with customers able to choose between PHEV or mild-hybrid electric vehicle (MHEV) powertrains for models that retain an internal combustion engine.

In 2024, the company sold 1,953 vehicles, with MHEV models representing less than one-fifth of the sales mix, a decline from the one-third share recorded the previous year.

Volco said market sentiment for its electrified offerings is robust.

The fully electric EX30, imported initially, sold out before local assembly started, signalling strong consumer interest.

Looking ahead, the forthcoming flagship seven-seaterEX90 is expected to bolster the portfolio further. The EX90, Volvo’s largest all-electric SUV, will incorporate advanced safety systems such as lidar, core computing and occupant monitoring.

In parallel with these product innovations, Volvo Car Malaysia expanded its range of exclusive customer experiences throughout 2024.

The brand hosted hands-on driving sessions for the EX30 launch, the inaugural Volvo Safety Driving Experience and the first Volvo Padel Open, reinforcing its market presence and commitment to premium customer engagement.

Globally, Volvo Cars set a new sales record in 2024 with 763,389 units sold — an 8 per cent increase over 2023. Sales of electrified vehicles saw significant gains, with BEV and PHEV deliveries rising by 54 per cent and 16 per cent respectively, resulting in electrified models constituting 46 per cent of total global sales.

Fully electric vehicles alone accounted for 23 per cent of sales in 2024, up from 16 per cent in the previous year.
