Volvo revamps infotainment and charging for 2025

Volvo Cars is set to introduce two major technology upgrades for the upcoming model year across its XC40, EX40, EC40, V60 and V90 ranges.

The enhancements comprise a new generation user experience, known as Volvo Car UX, and the integration of the ultra-fast Snapdragon Cockpit Platform from Qualcomm Technologies, Inc., which promises to make the infotainment system significantly faster and more responsive.

In addition, European models of the EX30, EX40 and EC40 will be equipped with the Plug & Charge service to streamline the public charging process.

The new Volvo Car UX is designed to simplify interaction with the vehicle’s central infotainment system while ensuring safety, focus and a personal touch. Building on real-world data and customer feedback, the interface — already implemented in the EX30, EX90 and XC90 —provides a more intuitive and customisable experience by incorporating several Google services.

It allows frequently used applications such as maps, media and phone to be easily accessible on the home screen.

Furthermore, a contextual bar adapts to the driver’s recent usage by displaying the most relevant apps, while the driver display behind the steering wheel has been enhanced with larger, clearer navigation details.

Starting this year, all models in the specified range will come equipped with the new user interface. Moreover, millions of Volvo vehicles with built-in Google will receive a simple over-the-air software update.

By later in 2025, an estimated 2.5 million vehicles, including those built as early as 2020, are expected to benefit from the upgrade.

Alongside the refreshed interface, the next-generation Snapdragon Cockpit Platform is being added to improve in-car connectivity.

This new platform, already used in the EX90 and EX30, is reported to more than double the speed of the current Google Android Auto-based system while offering graphics performance up to 10 times faster.

The boost in performance is designed to deliver a lag-free infotainment experience, presenting information promptly to reduce driver distraction. The upgraded platform will also be incorporated into the new XC90 SUV later this year.

For the European market, the EX30, EX40 and EC40 models will now feature the Plug & Charge service.

This system automates the authentication and billing process at compatible charging stations.

Drivers can simply plug in, with the vehicle recognising the charging station and processing the payment via information provided through Google Maps on the central display or the Volvo Cars app, thereby eliminating the need for additional cards or manual authentication.

These factory upgrades will be available on the 2026 model year versions of the XC40, EX40, EC40, S60, V60, V60 Cross Country, V90 and V90 Cross Country, with availability and timing varying between markets. Further details on additional 2026 updates are expected to be announced soon.
