Mazda CEO Masahiro Moro has given the clearest indication yet that the next-generation MX-5 is being engineered to accept an electric powertrain, while retaining the roadster’s emphasis on low weight.

Speaking to German publication Auto Motor und Sport, Moro said the MX-5 successor must be prepared for a future in which a combustion engine cannot be used.

Mazda’s immediate problem is reducing the weight of the car’s underlying structure without resorting to costly materials such as carbon-fibre-reinforced plastic.

The engineering team has been set a target ranging from just under 1,000kg to 1,200kg, according to Moro. He said he believed Mazda could meet it.

His comments indicated that Mazda wants the next car’s architecture to accommodate such a powertrain should market conditions or regulations require it.

Moro’s published remarks did not specify whether the range applies to the base vehicle, a combustion model or every planned derivative.

Batteries add considerable mass, while the MX-5 has built its reputation around compact dimensions, modest power and low weight rather than sheer output.

Mazda appears to be protecting the roadster’s basic formula while leaving room for more than one powertrain direction.
