Two Nissan Kicks e-Power SUVs have been handed over to the police for a two-month proof-of-concept evaluation.

Edaran Tan Chong Motor (ETCM), Nissan’s Malaysian distributor, said the exercise carries no purchase obligation.

The vehicles will be used for real-world patrol assessments covering performance, practicality and suitability for frontline duties.

Commissioner of Police Redzuan Abd Hamid, director of the police’s logistics and technology department, said testing the vehicles under working conditions would help the force identify transport options suited to its operational needs.

ETCM executive vice-president Christopher Tan said the trial would also show how the Kicks e-Power could serve different fleet applications, including frontline services.

The Kicks uses a series-hybrid system. A 1.2-litre three-cylinder petrol engine generates electricity, while a front-mounted electric motor drives the wheels. The vehicle does not require external charging.

Nissan Malaysia lists motor output at 129PS and 280Nm, with energy stored in a 2.06kWh lithium-ion battery. Prices currently start at RM113,800 for the VL and RM121,800 for the VLT, excluding insurance.

The model was launched in December 2024 at the Kuala Lumpur International Mobility Show.

ETCM did not disclose where the two vehicles would be deployed, how far they were expected to travel or what benchmarks the police would use to judge the trial.
