Ferrari’s first electric car has fetched US$40 million (about RM162.4 million) at Monterey Car Week, the highest auction price yet paid for a new car.

The one-off Ferrari Luce, known as “Chassis 0”, was sold by RM Sotheby’s without reserve. Ferrari identifies it as the car at the head of the Luce production sequence.

It was personalised through Ferrari’s Tailor Made programme before going under the hammer.

US billionaire investor and Ferrari collector Herbert A. Wertheim bought the car, according to Reuters. Proceeds from the sale will go towards educational projects in the US and other countries through The Ferrari Foundation.

The US$40 million result comfortably surpassed the previous new-car auction record. A one-off Ferrari Daytona SP3 fetched US$26 million (about RM105.5 million) in 2025, with Wertheim also buying that car.

Chassis 0 is finished in Madreperla Semi-Gloss paint developed specifically for the car, paired with Perla Le Mans metallic leather and Grigio Corvara trim inside. It also receives dedicated wheels, bespoke brake calipers and specially finished Ferrari badges.

Its new owner will not receive the Luce immediately. Ferrari will take the car back to Maranello following the sale, with handover planned for the first quarter of 2027.

The Luce is Ferrari’s first series-production battery-electric model, making the record-setting sale an unusual opening chapter for the marque’s move into full-electric cars.
