Mercedes-Benz has given the C-Class plug-in hybrid range a major update, led by the C 400 e 4Matic Saloon and Estate with up to 100km of WLTP electric range.

The PHEVs combine a further-developed four-cylinder petrol engine with an electric motor. In C 400 e 4Matic form, total output is 290kW with 650Nm, while a 19.53kWh usable battery supports the quoted EV range.

Charging is rated at up to 11kW AC and 55kW DC. Rear- and all-wheel-drive plug-in hybrid versions are offered.

The update comes shortly after Mercedes-Benz launched its first all-electric C-Class in Europe.

Unveiled in April, the C 400 4Matic electric has up to 762km of WLTP range and a 94kWh usable battery. Its pure-electric architecture also gives it a 97mm longer wheelbase than the conventionally powered saloon.

That leaves Mercedes running two distinct C-Class lines: the newer electric model and the extensively reworked Saloon and Estate using plug-in hybrid, petrol and diesel powertrains.

For buyers staying with combustion power, Mercedes describes the changes as the most comprehensive technical upgrade in the C-Class’s history.

The petrol line-up uses an updated 2.0-litre M 254 EVO four-cylinder engine with a new electric auxiliary compressor. Outputs are 130kW in the C 200, 160kW in the C 250 and 190kW in the C 300. All use a second-generation 48-volt integrated starter-generator, which can add up to 17kW and 205Nm.

Two versions of the 2.0-litre OM 654 EVO diesel remain, producing 120kW and 147kW. They also use 48-volt mild-hybrid assistance and are compatible with HVO100, B10 and B20 biofuels. The combustion-engine range has been prepared for upcoming EU7 requirements.

Changes extend beyond the engines. The exterior gets a more upright grille, optional illumination, star-pattern headlamps and reshaped bumpers. Inside are a 12.3-inch instrument display and an 11.9-inch portrait centre touchscreen running the latest MBUX system on Mercedes-Benz Operating System, or MB.OS.

The Estate carries 490 litres of luggage, expanding to 1,510 litres with the rear seatbacks folded.

Rear-axle steering remains available, turning the rear wheels by up to 2.5 degrees and cutting the turning circle to 10.64 metres. Mercedes has also retuned the suspension, while updated MB.DRIVE assistance can support automated lane changes and parking, depending on specification and market.

Orders in Germany open today.
