Luxeed, the Huawei–Chery joint EV brand, is reportedly preparing a new flagship MPV called the V9, and early chatter suggests it may debut an unusual safety idea: airbags integrated into the seats.
Instead of inflating from familiar locations such as the steering wheel, dashboard or doors, the proposed system would deploy from within the seat structure itself, forming a “helmet-like” protective envelope around an occupant’s head in a crash.
The claim is not yet confirmed by Luxeed, but CarNewsChina has cited social media reports indicating the technology could appear when the V9 reaches the Chinese market next spring. Those same accounts suggest the seats would automatically shift into a safer position when a collision is detected, with the seat-based airbags working alongside conventional side airbags.
The broader concept has precedent. Supplier Yanfeng demonstrated a seat design around two years ago that combined an embedded airbag with proactive seat positioning.
In that approach, the seat could respond to ADAS warnings by moving occupants into a more upright, safer posture before impact, while an early-deploying airbag helped manage body movement and reduce loads on the spine.
Whether Luxeed is adapting Yanfeng’s work, partnering with a supplier, or developing an in-house variant remains unclear.
The V9 is expected to sit at the top of Luxeed’s range. The brand, launched in 2023 under the HIMA partnership, currently offers the S7 sedan and R7 SUV, each available as a BEV or an extended-range EV.
Reportedly built on Chery’s E0X architecture, the V9 is tipped to measure more than 5.3 metres long, with a stretched wheelbase to prioritise cabin space.
Power is said to come in BEV and EREV forms, with CATL supplying batteries and an 800V electrical system enabling faster charging.
Luxury and tech features mentioned include Huawei’s Qiankun driving system described as Level 3-capable, a 192-channel LiDAR sensor, second-row “zero-gravity” captain’s chairs, large passenger screens, a refrigerator, an oxygen concentrator and a powered, soft-close front boot.
Whether the seat “helmet” airbag becomes a genuine safety step forward or a headline-grabbing differentiator will only be clear once Luxeed makes the V9 official.
