Volvo is adding Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) capability to the EX30 through an over-the-air software update, allowing compatible versions of the electric SUV to run external electrical equipment from their traction battery.
The update began rolling out this week to new and existing EX30 customers and is free of charge. Volvo said distribution will continue globally over the coming weeks, although V2L availability depends on market and vehicle configuration.
With the required adapter connected to the EX30’s charging port, owners can plug in appliances or equipment much as they would use a household power socket. Output is rated at up to 3 kW and 16A.
That is enough for equipment such as power tools, cooking appliances or a portable fridge. The car stops supplying electricity automatically when its battery state of charge falls below 20 per cent.
The V2L adapter is sold separately, with pricing and availability varying by market.
Volvo describes V2L as one use of the EX30’s bidirectional charging capability. The rollout covers compatible CCS2 markets in Europe, the Middle East and Africa, Asia-Pacific (APAC) and Latin America. It will not be offered on EX30s in the US, Canada, Mexico, South Korea, Taiwan or Japan.
Malaysia falls within the announced APAC rollout region, although Volvo has yet to specify local timing.
Plug & Charge is also being added, but on a narrower basis. Volvo said the feature is currently limited to Europe and EX30s from model year 2026 onwards.
At compatible public chargers, Plug & Charge allows the station to identify the vehicle and associated charging account after the cable is connected. Authentication and payment can then take place automatically without a separate app or charging card.
The software package also changes parts of the EX30 interface. A redesigned settings menu is intended to reduce clutter, while a customisable contextual bar can surface selected functions and predictive actions.
Volvo had announced in February that V2L and interface changes were coming to the EX30. The latest update now puts those functions into customer cars, subject to regional and vehicle compatibility. The same capability is also available on the larger electric EX60.
