Tesla has introduced new Standard versions of the Model Y SUV and Model 3 saloon, trimming list prices by about US$5,000 (RM21,000) to US$39,990 (RM169,000) and US$36,990 (RM156,000).
The saving comes with fewer features.
Both cars drop FM radio and power-folding mirrors; the audio system is pared back and the cabin uses textile inserts.
The Model Y loses the rear passenger screen and its “air wave” rear ventilation, and keeps its glass roof but covers it with a headliner. Styling is simplified with the light bars deleted.
Range and speed are lower than pricier trims.
The Model 3 Standard is rated at 516km with 0–100kph in 6.1s and uses a ~69.5 kWh pack.
The Model Y Standard also claims 516km and 7.1s to 100kph. DC fast-charge peaks differ: Model Y up to 225 kW, Model 3 up to 250 kW. Both are rear-wheel drive.
Driver assistance is limited: Autosteer isn’t included, and Full Self-Driving (Supervised) is an US$8,000 (RM34,000) option.
The launch lands just after the US$7,500 (RM32,000) federal EV tax credit expired on Sept 30, leaving effective prices higher than the prior week in many cases.
Competition at lower price points is intensifying: BYD’s Seagull in China can dip below US$10,000 during promotions, while Chevrolet’s Equinox EV starts around US$33,600–US$35,100 in the US.
