Volkswagen has unveiled the ID.3 GTI, a 326 PS electric hot hatch that becomes the most powerful series-production GTI in the badge’s 50-year history.

The new model succeeds the ID.3 GTX as the performance flagship of the ID.3 range and is Volkswagen’s second all-electric GTI after the smaller ID. Polo GTI.

Its rear-mounted electric motor produces 240 kW (326 PS) and 545 Nm, sending power to the rear wheels through a single-speed transmission. That makes it the first rear-wheel-drive Volkswagen to wear the GTI badge.

The output matches the previous ID.3 GTX Performance, although Volkswagen said the drive system has been further optimised. With Launch Control, the GTI reaches 100 kph in 5.6 seconds, one tenth quicker than the GTX Performance, and is electronically limited to 200 kph.

Its 326 PS also edges the petrol-powered Golf GTI Edition 50 by just 1 PS, although the Golf is quicker to 100 kph at 5.3 seconds and has a higher 270 kph top speed.

A 79 kWh lithium-ion battery, measured at net capacity, provides a forecast WLTP range of up to 601 km. DC charging peaks at 183 kW, with a 10-80% charge taking around 29 minutes.

Volkswagen lists the car as using its MEB+ architecture. The adaptive DCC sports chassis, progressive steering and power delivery receive GTI-specific tuning, with a dedicated GTI mode joining Eco, Comfort, Sport and Individual.

Pressing the illuminated GTI button on the steering wheel selects the sportiest drivetrain and chassis settings and enables Launch Control. Cabin lighting turns red, the instruments switch to a GTI display and a synthesised combustion-engine sound accompanies acceleration.

Standard equipment includes 20-inch Wörthersee alloy wheels with 225-section tyres, while 235-section rubber is optional.

Styling is based on the facelifted ID.3 Neo but adds traditional GTI cues. A red strip runs across the nose above the illuminated light bar, recalling the grille surround of the original 1976 Golf GTI.

A gloss-black honeycomb lower intake, vertical LED elements and further red detailing distinguish it from the regular ID.3. Unlike the previous GTX, the roof, rear spoiler and tailgate panel are finished in the body colour rather than black.

Five exterior colours will be offered: Tornado Red, Moonstone Grey, Scale Silver metallic, Grenadilla Black metallic and Glacier White metallic.

Inside, a 10.25-inch Digital Cockpit replaces the previous smaller display and sits alongside a 12.9-inch Innovision infotainment screen.

Volkswagen has also brought back more physical controls, including a dedicated strip for the climate functions and hazard lights, plus a rotary controller for volume and track selection.

GTI-specific touches include a red 12 o’clock steering-wheel marker, dashboard accents and sports seats with a modern interpretation of the tartan pattern used by the original Golf GTI.

Vehicle-to-load capability is available through an optional charging-port adapter, allowing the traction battery to power external electrical equipment. One-pedal driving is also included.

Other options include an augmented-reality head-up display, Harman Kardon audio, panoramic roof and electrically adjustable sports seats with memory and massage functions.

The latest Connected Travel Assist can recognise traffic lights and automatically bring the car to a stop when it detects a red signal.

Volkswagen describes the ID.3 GTI as a near-production vehicle. It is due to launch in the first quarter of 2027, with pre-sales starting early in the year. Pricing has not been announced..
