Sika has staged Malaysia’s first live automotive windscreen crash-test evaluation, putting its replacement-glass adhesive through a full-scale frontal impact at the Malaysian Institute of Road Safety Research (Miros) PC3 Laboratory in Melaka.

Held on Sept 8, the demonstration used a Perodua Ativa fitted with a replacement windscreen bonded using SikaTack DRIVE. After the adhesive’s specified 60-minute Minimum Drive Away Time (MDAT), the vehicle was subjected to a 48 kph frontal barrier impact.

The event was recognised by the Malaysia Book of Records as the “First Automotive Windscreen Crash Test Evaluation 2026 in Malaysia”.

Sika said the exercise was intended to demonstrate the safety role of a correctly bonded replacement windscreen. In a collision, the glass needs to remain secured to the body so that the vehicle’s occupant-protection systems can work as intended.

SikaTack DRIVE is a one-component polyurethane adhesive developed for automotive glass replacement. Sika’s Malaysian product data sheet specifies a 60-minute MDAT for cars with airbags and says the adhesive has been tested to US Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard **FMVSS 212** using 95th-percentile crash-test dummies.

The company said installation quality is also critical, as using the wrong adhesive or releasing a vehicle before the required drive-away time can affect windscreen retention during an accident.

Sika has carried out more than 80 windscreen crash tests over the past 40 years. It also operates a Certified Auto Glass Installer programme in Malaysia, under which participating technicians receive training in its glass-replacement procedures.

The Melaka test extends that testing programme into a public demonstration in Malaysia, with the windscreen remaining bonded to the vehicle following the frontal impact.
