Mercedes-Benz has begun comprehensive testing of its forthcoming electric GLC at the Technology Centre (MTC) in Sindelfingen, Germany.
The trials, led by Mercedes-Benz CEO Ola Källenius, form part of the marque’s largest product-launch programme, with the model set to premier at Munich’s IAA motor show on Sept 7.
A brand video released on Mercedes-Benz’s YouTube channel documents five bespoke challenges devised to assess the SUV’s design, versatility and driving dynamics.
In the latest instalment of its “Electrifying the Future” series, Mercedes-Benz presenter Sarah Harman joins Källenius to introduce the electric GLC’s headline features.
Previous episodes have seen the electric CLA and electric G-Class undergo similar field tests in Austria and Sweden, providing audiences with early insights well before official debuts.
The all-new electric GLC will launch in GLC 400 4Matic specification, incorporating an S-Class-derived Airmatic air-suspension system as part of the Agility & Comfort Package.
Combined with rear-axle steering capable of 4.5° wheel angle per side, the setup delivers a nearly vibration-free ride and enhanced agility, whether on urban thoroughfares or high-speed motorways.
Although sharing the current model’s familiar silhouette, the electric GLC’s wheelbase has been stretched by eight centimetres, yielding more generous legroom and headroom for both front and rear occupants.
Boot capacity stands at 570 litres, expanding to 1,740 litres with the rear seats folded. A 128-litre front trunk — accessed via touch control — adds to the model’s load-carrying versatility.
Underpinning the new GLC is an 800-volt electrical architecture paired with Mercedes-Benz’s latest battery technology.
This configuration supports DC fast-charging rates in excess of 320kW on the GLC 400 4Matic, replenishing about 260km of range in 10 minutes.
A country-specific DC converter also permits use of 400-volt chargers where 800-volt infrastructure is unavailable.
Towing capacity rises to 2.4 tonnes braked, with a maximum tongue weight of 100kg, facilitating the transport of caravans, boat trailers or bicycle carriers. Electronic trailer-stabilisation (ESP) and a trailer-manoeuvring assistant feature as standard, ensuring safe handling when hauling heavy loads.
Inside, a next-generation MBUX Hyperscreen dominates the dashboard, delivering a panoramic display driven by the MB.OS operating system. The curved, multi-panel interface provides seamless access to navigation, infotainment and vehicle controls through both touch and voice inputs.
“The all-new GLC is comfort, dynamics, efficiency and intelligence in perfect harmony,” said Källenius. “We’re not just introducing a new model – we’re electrifying our top seller.”
Additional variants and market-specific details will be announced following the IAA unveiling.
