Audi’s new A2 e-tron will offer up to 646km of WLTP range when it goes on sale in Europe later this year, giving the German brand a compact EV aimed squarely at long-distance usability as well as low energy consumption.
The longest-range version is the 170kW model, which uses an 84kWh gross-capacity nickel manganese cobalt battery. Audi rates it at up to 646km WLTP, while the more powerful 240kW version uses the same battery but manages up to 630km.
A separate 140kW variant is the efficiency leader. Fitted with a 61kWh battery and an optional efficiency package, it consumes 12.8kWh/100km under WLTP testing, which Audi says makes it the most efficient series-production model in its history. Its maximum range is 515km.
The entry-level A2 e-tron gets a 52kWh lithium iron phosphate battery, 125kW and 350Nm, with up to 423km of range. Audi uses LFP chemistry for both the 52kWh and 61kWh batteries, while the larger 84kWh unit uses NMC cells.
All versions are rear-wheel drive. Outputs run from 125kW to 240kW, with the top model producing 545Nm and completing 0-100kph in 5.7 seconds.
Charging performance varies with battery size. The 84kWh versions accept up to 183kW DC and take a claimed 29 minutes to go from 10% to 80%. The 52kWh battery supports 100kW DC charging, while the 61kWh pack peaks at 105kW.
Bidirectional charging is also available. Vehicle-to-Load can power external devices, while Vehicle-to-Home will allow the car to feed electricity into a household system in Germany, Austria and Switzerland when used with compatible DC wallboxes.
Audi says a drag coefficient of 0.24 helps reduce energy use. The A2 e-tron also gets a largely enclosed underbody, active cooling-air intake and aerodynamically developed wheels.
Inside are an 11.9-inch digital instrument display and 12.8-inch central touchscreen. Adaptive cruise control, emergency braking assistance, parking sensors and a reversing camera are standard.
Three regenerative braking levels can be selected with steering-wheel paddles, while a separate B setting provides one-pedal driving to a standstill. The car rides on 18- to 20-inch wheels and has a 2.77-metre wheelbase. Audi also offers an optional 1.6-square-metre panoramic glass roof, while recycled material is used in more than 300 components.
The A2 e-tron will be built at Audi’s Ingolstadt plant. German orders open on Sept 10, with deliveries starting in December. Prices start at €38,200, equivalent to about RM179,600 at current exchange rates for the German market initially.
