Proton’s Research and Development Centre (PRDC) in Hangzhou Bay, China, set up in partnership with Zhejiang Geely Holding Ltd, has boosted the Malaysian marque’s product development over the past year, according to the carmaker.
The centre employs a structured approach that spans conceptual strategy through design freeze to final data evaluation, ensuring effective progress in product development.
Proton engineers stationed there learnt to use digital modelling tools to make intelligent vehicle systems for diverse markets.
They also gained knowledge on chassis tuning, braking performance, and noise, vibration and harshness (NVH) control, while also refining fuel-efficiency of cars to suit local road conditions.
Proton was quick to point out its contributions to the e.MAS 7, where the Malaysian team helped test thermal management, power charging protocols and regenerative-braking tuning to optimise range and durability in tropical climates.
Advanced testing infrastructure at the Hangzhou Bay facility — including climatic chambers and proving grounds — has enabled Proton R&D teams in China and Malaysia to work closely in speeding up development work.
Proton said the joint effort had also provided Geely with insights into Asean consumer preferences and regulatory requirements.
Proton said it plans to expand its R&D workforce in China and Malaysia to deepen expertise in electric-architecture design and software-defined vehicle platforms.
