Toyota Motor Corporation has signed a new strategic alliance with Chinese automakers FAW and GAC to accelerate electrification and intelligent-vehicle development while restructuring its joint-venture operations in China.
Under the agreement signed on Oct 8, GAC will acquire FAW’s 50% stake in FAW Toyota through the issuance of shares. FAW will subsequently become a major shareholder in GAC.
FAW Toyota will remain an independent company, but will work more closely with GAC Toyota across research and development, procurement, manufacturing and sales.
The arrangement is intended to improve competitiveness and reduce overlapping operations between Toyota’s two Chinese joint ventures, which have traditionally maintained separate product ranges, engineering teams and dealership networks.
The restructuring comes amid mounting pressure from Chinese automakers, whose rapid expansion in electric vehicles and aggressive pricing have challenged established foreign brands.
Toyota already produces several China-specific EVs through its local partnerships.
FAW Toyota manufactures the bZ3 electric sedan and bZ5 electric SUV coupe. The bZ3 was jointly developed with BYD through their technology joint venture, while the bZ5 uses BYD-supplied Blade batteries and electric-drive hardware.
GAC Toyota, meanwhile, produces the bZ3X electric SUV and the larger bZ7 electric sedan.
Closer cooperation could allow the two operations to share development resources and coordinate future electric models, although Toyota has not announced any new vehicles under the alliance.
Separately, Toyota is reportedly preparing to enter China’s extended-range electric vehicle (EREV) market.
Nikkei Asia reported in September that production could begin in April 2027, with targets of around 200,000 vehicles that year and 400,000 in 2028.
EREVs use electric motors for propulsion, with a petrol engine generating electricity to extend driving range.
Toyota has not confirmed those production targets or identified the models involved. No connection between the reported EREV programme and the new alliance has been established.
The latest agreement builds on Toyota’s longstanding partnerships with FAW and GAC, established in 2002 and 2004 respectively. Their joint ventures have collectively served more than 23 million customers in China.
