Tangkak is known for Gunung Ledang and beef noodles. In 2025, the Johor town is starting to gain fame as the site for the first EV charging hub for commercial trucks.

All the while, charge point operators have been rolling out chargers across the country in the past few years but they have been for smaller passenger electric vehicles.

Now, companies with electric lorries and heavy commercial trucks can stop over at Tangkak to get a charge-up.

Getting there is made easier as it is located just near the Tangkak toll plaza, with easy access both ways on the North-South Expressway. You can bet more such sites catering to trucks will be coming up nationwide in the coming months and years.

Apart from meeting the needs of electric commercial vehicles, it’s likely to be opened to private passenger cars by next month.

ChargeEV chief corporate affairs officer Huzaimi Noh Omar said the station has eight bays for charging.

The station uses 400kW Kempower DC chargers that are capable of dynamic load balancing. It costs RM1.60 per kWh but is half the price if the user is subscribed to ChargeEV’s annual membership plan (applicable to existing subscribers. Note that ChargEV no longer offers the subscription plan with effect from late 2024. It will introduce new ones in 2025. Existing users will continue to enjoy the plan until it expires.)

Huzaimi said it takes about 30 minutes to get a vehicle charged up. He also said the charging ststaion is supported by an advanced battery energy management system.

Deputy Minister of Energy Transition and Water Transformation Akmal Nasrullah Mohd Nasir said the station was developed through a collaboration between the Tangkak District Council and chargepoint operator ChargEV.

He said the station is awaiting approval from the Energy Commission and is awaiting approval for testing and certification from Tenaga Nasional Berhad.

The government aims for 10,000 EV charging stations this year.
