Mercedes-AMG has once again raised the performance bar with its ONE hypercar, setting a new record for production vehicles on the Nürburgring-Nordschleife.
Maro Engel, Mercedes-AMG brand ambassador and DTM driver, completed the 20.832-kilometre track in 6:29.090 minutes, beating his previous record by over five seconds.
This achievement makes the ONE the first road-legal production car to complete the Nordschleife in under 6:30 minutes.
The hypercar, equipped with Formula 1 hybrid drive technology, has held the title since October 2022, further solidifying its dominance in the super-sports car class.
The record was set on Sept 23, under ideal conditions with a dry track and temperatures of 15°C (air) and 20°C (asphalt).
Engel used the AMG ONE’s four-stage Energy Flow Control system to maximise the use of its hybrid powertrain, strategically recuperating energy during braking phases.
With a top speed of 352kph and a total power output of 782 kW (1,063 hp) from its combination of one combustion engine and four electric motors, the ONE brings Formula 1 technology to the road.
The car features advanced motorsport technologies like a carbon monocoque, active aerodynamics, and a pushrod chassis.
For the record lap, Engel selected the “Race Plus” mode, which optimises aerodynamics and chassis settings for maximum performance.
This setting also lowered the car by 37 mm at the front and 30 mm at the rear. Engel activated the Drag Reduction System (DRS) on straights to reduce aerodynamic drag and increase speed, while the system automatically re-engaged for additional downforce in corners.
The Mercedes-AMG ONE’s high-performance hybrid system is derived directly from Formula 1, incorporating a 1.6-litre V6 engine paired with electric motors.
The hybrid system uses cutting-edge technology like a high-speed electric turbocharger and a lithium-ion battery with Formula 1 cooling technology.
The electric motors on the front axle contribute to the car’s impressive agility, with torque vectoring for precise handling. Additionally, the vehicle’s braking system allows for up to 80% energy recuperation during normal driving conditions.
AMG ONE customers can enjoy many of the performance features used in the record-setting run, including Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 R tyres developed specifically for the car and a high-performance ceramic braking system.
