GWM has expanded its Malaysian assembly operations with the start of production of the Ora 5 Hi2 HEV SUV and Wey G9 Hi4 HEV MPV at EP Manufacturing Bhd’s (EPMB) plant in Pegoh, Melaka.
Both models marked their first local production rollout on Nov 2, taking GWM’s CKD portfolio to four vehicles. The other two are the Haval H6 HEV and Wey G9 Hi4 PHEV.
The latest addition also brings EPMB’s total assembly line-up to eight models across GWM, MG and XPeng.
According to EPMB, the two new hybrids use Malaysian-sourced components, including front frame modules, rear axle assemblies, instrument panels and wiring harnesses.
The Ora 5 is due for its Malaysian launch in November, with bookings open since Oct 5 and an estimated price below RM115,000.
Its 1.5-litre turbocharged engine works with an electric motor through a two-speed dedicated hybrid transmission, delivering a combined 223 PS and 476 Nm.
GWM quotes fuel consumption of 4.4 litres/100km and a driving range exceeding 1,100km under specified test conditions.
The seven-seat Wey G9 Hi4 HEV, launched in October at RM249,800, uses a 2.0-litre turbocharged hybrid system producing 358 PS and 782 Nm, with all-wheel drive.
GWM said local assembly has exceeded 10,000 vehicles since CKD operations began in October 2024.
More than 1,100 Malaysia-assembled Wey G9 MPVs have also been exported to Thailand and Indonesia, extending the Melaka plant’s role beyond domestic production.
