Mercedes-Benz Vans is set to launch its first all-electric VLE in 2026, signalling a new chapter for the brand’s van division.
Offering up to eight seats, the VLE will cater to family and leisure users as well as exclusive VIP shuttle services, blending limousine-like driving behaviour with MPV versatility.
Prototypes have now cleared three major development milestones:
⦁ Aerodynamics validation: In Stuttgart’s wind tunnel, heavily camouflaged prototypes demonstrated a streamlined roofline flowing into a rounded rear, yielding an impressive drag coefficient and underlining the efficiency of the exterior design.
⦁ High-speed handling: At Nardò test track in Southern Italy, engineers fine-tuned the electric drivetrain under dynamic conditions, optimising recuperation processes, thermal management and rear-axle steering settings to enhance both performance and efficiency.
⦁ Long-range endurance: A near-production VLE covered almost 1,100 km from Stuttgart to Rome with just two 15-minute charging stops. This run showcased its suitability for daily use across varied road types and confirmed its potential appeal to families and active-leisure customers.
Underpinning the VLE is a newly developed, modular and scalable van architecture. This platform not only distinguishes the privately positioned Grand Limousine models — the Mercedes-Benz VLE and forthcoming VLS — from commercial transporters but also paves the way for a top-end segment MPV offering with the eight-seat VLE and luxury-focused VLS.
By merging efficient aerodynamics, refined high-speed dynamics and proven long-distance capability, the VLE demonstrates Mercedes-Benz’s commitment to customer-driven design, functionality and usability. Its successful prototype trials mark a crucial step towards the 2026 market launch and the broader electrification of the brand’s van portfolio.
