Honda will introduce the 2026 Prelude grand touring coupe with chassis and powertrain upgrades drawn from the Civic Type R.
The new model gains a dual-axis front suspension, first seen on the 2017 Type R, to reduce torque steer, alongside widened front and rear tracks. Brembo front brakes are specified and, together with retuned damping, aim to balance sporty handling and long-distance comfort.
For the first time, the Prelude will feature electrification via a two-motor hybrid system akin to that used in the current Civic Hybrid.
The setup incorporates Honda’s S+ Shift mode, which simulates paddle-shifted gear changes, including sound and torque modulation, to heighten driver engagement.
Honda is understood to plan a Prelude Type S by autumn 2026, followed by a high-performance Type R in 2027.
The Type R is expected to employ an advanced twin-motor hybrid system delivering more than 224 kW, foregoing a conventional gearbox in favour of a sophisticated simulated-shift arrangement.
Handling upgrades for the Type R are likely to include lower ride height, further widened tracks, extra structural bracing and bespoke aerodynamic elements. Consideration is being given to a carbon-fibre cabin, though its production viability remains undecided.
The dual-axis front suspension maintains consistent tyre contact under hard cornering and braking, mitigating torque steer. Brake and damping settings are being calibrated to deliver both agility on demanding roads and refinement suitable for grand touring.
