Mercedes-Benz Malaysia today offered a first glimpse of the all-electric G-Class — officially badged G 580 with EQ Technology — at its flagship showcase, marking the zero-emissions model as the latest chapter in the G-Wagon’s storied lineage.
It’s set for launch later this month.
The five-seat vehicle retains the iconic boxy silhouette and ladder-frame underpinnings of its combustion-engine forebears, with EV-specific touches including a closed-off grille, sculpted aerodynamic enhancements and flush door handles.
Hand-built alongside its petrol and diesel counterparts at Magna Steyr’s plant in Graz, Austria, the G 580 heralds Mercedes-Benz’s broader electrification push in Malaysia.
Underneath the familiar exterior, the G 580 employs four independent electric motors — one per wheel — delivering a combined 432kW and 1, 165 Nm of torque.
Powered by a 116 kWh battery pack, it accelerates from 0–100kph in around 4.7 seconds and is governed to a top speed of 180kph. Thanks to its two-speed gearbox and sophisticated battery thermal management, the model targets real-world usability with rapid charging capability and consistent performance across temperatures.
A standout feature is the G Turn—also known as a tank turn—where the SUV can rotate up to 720 degrees on its axis by driving the front and rear wheels in opposite directions.
This manoeuvre, enabled by the four-motor layout, aids tight-space navigation both on-road and off-road. Traditional off-road aids remain, with three differential locks, high- and low-range gearing and a reinforced frame, ensuring the electric variant preserves the G-Class’s legendary all-terrain prowess.
The G 580 made its world debut simultaneously in Beijing and Los Angeles in April 2024 and is already on sale in Thailand from 9.5 million baht (around RM 1.2 million).
Nadia Trimmel, Vice President of Marketing and Sales at Mercedes-Benz Malaysia, said the electric G-Class “shows how icons can evolve—proving that timeless design and sustainability can progress together.”
Its launch coincided with the return of Mercedes-Benz FashionWeek Kuala Lumpur, reflecting the brand’s synergy of cutting-edge engineering and design.
As part of its ongoing electrification strategy, Mercedes-Benz Malaysia will offer the G 580 with a suite of services including dedicated EV charging infrastructure, customer education programmes and after-sales support tailored to high-voltage systems.
