The BYD Sealion 7 has gained warranty-backed vehicle-to-grid (V2G) support in Australia through an expanded programme run by Amber Electric and BYD Australia.
The electric SUV becomes the second BYD model supported by Amber’s V2G programme after the Atto 3.
V2G allows a compatible electric vehicle to send electricity stored in its battery back to a home or the power grid through bidirectional charging equipment. That goes beyond the Sealion 7’s existing vehicle-to-load capability, which can power external electrical devices.
Importantly, BYD battery warranty coverage will remain in place for Sealion 7 owners taking part in the approved Amber programme. The arrangement should not be interpreted as blanket warranty approval for V2G use with any third-party charger or system.
More than 50 homes are already using Amber’s V2G system. With the Australian Renewable Energy Agency (Arena)-backed expansion targeting 1,000 households, demand appears considerably larger: Amber said more than 8,000 people have joined its waiting list.
Arena has committed a further A$13.6 million (about RM39.5 million) to the project, bringing its total funding to A$16.8 million. The expansion is intended to study issues including charging standards, battery performance and warranty treatment as V2G deployment increases.
Amber and BYD are also using the programme to demonstrate how EV batteries could help households reduce electricity costs while supplying energy back to the grid when required.
