Leapmotor is doing what Geely and Jaecoo have been doing in recent times.
It is joining them to exploit the high mileage angle to try to sell more cars.
It used its C10, C11 and C16 Range Extender Electric Vehicles (REEV) to travel from its headquarters in Hangzhou, China to Johor, Malaysia — a distance of 3,000km.
The C11 is a coupe version of the C10, while the C16 is a six-seater SUV.
The Asean Expedition Drive sought to show off the frugal yet highly advanced nature of the vehicles.
A key highlight of this expedition is the Leapmotor C10 REEV, a distinct model from the C10 EV offered locally. Featuring a 1.5-litre 4-cylinder petrol engine designed to recharge the 28.4kWh battery pack, and combined with a 158kW electric motor, the C10 REEV SUV boasts 1,150km (NEDC) driving range.
Some Chinese carmakers – Leapmotor included – continue to use the outdated NEDC cycle because the big numbers coming out of it look good for them. But realistically speaking, just assume 20% off for a 920km range under the current WLTP cycle, which is still impressive.
The three vehicles also went on a 10-day tour across Peninsula Malaysia from April 14-23, visiting local Leapmotor showrooms nationwide.
