Mercedes-Benz VLE wants to make the luxury van feel less like a van

Mercedes-Benz is adopting a familiar approach with the new VLE.

It’s taking a vehicle class people think they already understand, then insist it belongs in a more glamorous category. In this case, the claim is that the VLE is not merely an electric MPV or shuttle, but a luxury limousine with van-sized space.

In theory, the VLE has the ingredients to make it acceptable.

Mercedes said it would seat up to eight, run on a new van-specific platform, use the firm’s MB.OS software system, and deliver more than 700km of WLTP range in selected versions.

The battery has 115kWh of usable capacity, while the 800-volt electrical system is said to allow up to 355km of WLTP range to be added in 15 minutes. If that translates well outside a test cycle, this thing could be unusually capable over distance.

Mercedes is also chasing efficiency in a body style not known for it. A quoted drag coefficient of 0.25 is strikingly low for something this large. The company pairs that with a sleeker silhouette than you would normally expect from a people carrier, plus the usual high-end Mercedes visual cues such as illuminated trim, dramatic lighting and a polished interior finish.

Inside, the VLE is designed to be reconfigured in several ways, from family mover to VIP shuttle. Seats can slide, shift or come out entirely, and higher-spec versions add powered rear-seat adjustment via the app or head unit.

Mercedes calling this “seat ballet” is exactly the sort of line that should be taken with a raised eyebrow, but the underlying flexibility does sound genuinely useful.

Then comes the entertainment. Rear passengers can get a retractable 31.3-inch 8K screen, video conferencing, gaming, streaming and a 22-speaker Burmester sound system with Dolby Atmos. It is less “van with nice trim” and more “rolling lounge with corporate ambitions”.

The chassis spec is serious too. Airmatic air suspension, seven-degree rear-axle steering and up to 305kW in 4Matic form suggest Mercedes does not want this to drive like a lumbering box. The claim that its turning circle is comparable to the new CLA hints at how hard Mercedes is pushing the engineering line.

The VLE does not look like a half-hearted electrified van. It looks like Mercedes-Benz taking the large luxury people mover seriously, and trying to make buyers do the same.
