Toyota has confirmed that a hydrogen fuel-cell version of the Hilux is planned for production in 2028, with the pick-up targeting more than 400km of WLTP driving range.
The Hilux Fuel Cell Electric Vehicle (FCEV) is also being developed to tow up to 2,500kg, Toyota Motor Europe said at IAA Transportation 2026 in Hannover.
The model will use hydrogen to generate electricity through a fuel-cell system, which then powers an electric drivetrain. Toyota has not yet disclosed production specifications such as motor output, hydrogen tank capacity or drivetrain layout.
The 2028 timing is not entirely new. Toyota previously said the ninth-generation Hilux would gain an FCEV variant in Europe and Oceania from 2028. The latest announcement moves the programme forward by confirming planned production and providing the first range and towing targets.
Toyota previously built 10 hydrogen Hilux prototypes in the UK using technology derived from the Mirai fuel-cell car. Those test vehicles quoted a range of up to 600km, but their specifications should not be taken as representative of the production model.
The hydrogen Hilux will sit alongside other powertrain options in Toyota’s commercial-vehicle line-up as the company continues to pursue a multi-technology approach to lower-emission transport.
