Grey has become Britain’s dominant car colour, and Vehicle Data Global (VDG) says the rise of electric vehicles helps explain why. Their high-tech image fits the neutral finishes already common across phones, computers and other electronic products.

Grey also works for fleets and dealers because it hides scratches, stone chips and car-wash swirl marks better than many solid colours over thousands of miles of commercial use. That can cut paint correction and preparation costs when company cars return to the used market.

VDG examined the colours of vehicles registered in Britain, including those first registered more than a century ago. Green and black were prominent during the wartime and post-war years, before blue and red gained ground as consumer culture expanded in the 1960s.

Red was Britain’s favourite from 1973 until 1997. Since 2000, the market has shifted between silver, black, white and grey.

Silver appealed because road grime was less obvious and the finish could be restored relatively easily. Grey provides many of the same practical benefits, while its restrained appearance suits the look of modern EVs.

VDG’s analysis suggests Britain’s monochrome car park reflects both vehicle styling and the resale priorities of fleet operators, rather than consumer fashion alone.
