Ford and Geely will establish a joint venture to produce five models at Ford’s Almussafes factory near Valencia, giving the underused Spanish plant a substantially larger production programme from 2028.

Ford will hold roughly two-thirds of the venture and Geely about one-third.

The agreement remains subject to regulatory approval, with the new company expected to be formally established in 2027.

The plant will continue assembling the Ford Kuga and add a European version of the multi-energy Ford Bronco in 2028.

A new Ford crossover, designed by the US automaker and developed jointly with Geely, will also be produced with a choice of powertrains.

Geely EX5. The Proton e.MAS 7 sold in Malaysia is based on this Geely model.

Geely will add two battery-electric SUVs from 2028. The vehicles will retain Geely branding, giving the Chinese manufacturer its first European production base and reducing its reliance on cars imported from China.

The Geely EX5 would be the first of the two SUVs. The EX5 is the export-market version of China’s Geely Galaxy E5, the model that also underpins Malaysia’s Proton e.MAS 7.

Ford Europe president Jim Baumbick described the production plan as involving one workforce, two brands and five vehicles.

Almussafes currently builds fewer than 90,000 vehicles annually despite having capacity for about 500,000.

Its workforce numbers around 4,100, and Ford and Geely expect employment to increase as production expands, although neither company has disclosed investment or hiring figures.
