Proton is taking its e.MAS business into Brunei, appointing Grand Motors Sdn Bhd to represent the electric vehicle brand in the sultanate.

Grand Motors will handle retail operations, marketing, customer relations and aftersales for Proton e.MAS in Brunei. A dedicated e.MAS showroom and service centre is also planned, though Proton has yet to confirm the launch timing or model line-up.

That line-up is not hard to guess. In Malaysia, Proton currently offers only three e.MAS models: the e.MAS 5, e.MAS 7 and e.MAS 7 PHEV.

The appointment does not change Proton’s existing petrol-model business in Brunei. PAD Motors Sdn Bhd remains the authorised distributor for the main Proton range, including the Saga, S70, X50, X70 and X90.

Proton International Corporation chief executive officer Edmund Lim said the Brunei appointment was part of Proton’s plan to grow its EV business beyond Malaysia.

Brunei is familiar territory for Proton. It was the first export destination for the latest Saga earlier this year, and remains one of the Malaysian carmaker’s established overseas markets.

For Proton e.MAS, Brunei adds another Asean step to an export run that has already taken the e.MAS 7 to markets including Nepal, Trinidad and Tobago, Singapore and Mauritius.
