JAC will locally assemble its T9 PHEV and BEV pick-up trucks in Kulim, Kedah, with the electrified models set to become Malaysia’s first locally assembled PHEV and battery-electric pick-ups.
Evolvelectric Motors, JAC’s pick-up distributor, has signed an agreement with Feytech Holdings subsidiary FT Assembly (FTA) to assemble the T9 range at Feytech’s manufacturing facility. The programme will also cover the T9 diesel.
Production will be introduced in phases, starting with the T9 PHEV, followed by the diesel and BEV.
Assembly is expected to begin in November, with first-year capacity estimated at 3,000 units.
FTA has invested RM3.6 million to set up the 84,000 sq ft assembly operation, with investment potentially rising to RM8 million over the next three years. The facility will handle assembly, inspection, testing and quality control.
The partners are targeting up to 30% local content. They estimate the operation could generate RM230 million in economic value annually while adding jobs and business for local suppliers.
The locally assembled T9 PHEV is expected to begin rolling out in November, while BEV production is targeted for January 2027. JAC is also studying exports from Malaysia, subject to suitable market conditions.
Before CKD production starts, the fully imported T9 PHEV is due to enter the market in early November following multiple delays.
It offers up to 1,000km of combined petrol-electric range and as much as 1,000Nm from its dual-motor system. Equipment includes ADAS 2.0, while the model has received a five-star ANCAP safety rating.
The project also marks Feytech’s move beyond automotive components and seats into complete vehicle assembly.
