Omoda Jaecoo Malaysia has put up a social media teaser for the fully electric Jaecoo J5, signalling a local launch is not far off.
The J5 EV is already well-established in the region. It went on sale in Thailand last year and subsequently in Indonesia, so Malaysia is essentially the last major Southeast Asian market to get it.
The hardware is a known quantity: a 60.9 kWh battery pack, a front-mounted motor producing 211 PS and 288 Nm, and a 0–100 kph sprint time of 7.7 seconds. Top speed is 175 kph.
Range is rated at 400 km on the WLTP cycle — a figure that stacks up respectably against rivals in this segment. DC fast charging is supported at up to 130 kW, which gets the battery from 30 to 80 per cent in around 28 minutes. Vehicle-to-load is included too, at up to 3.3 kW.
Proportions match the petrol J5 already on sale here — 4,380 mm long, 2,620 mm wheelbase — putting it in Honda HR-V and Proton X50 territory. Without an engine up front, the EV gains a 35-litre frunk. Boot space is 480 litres, extending to 1,284 litres with the rear seats folded.
Kit list from regional markets includes a 13.2-inch touchscreen, an eight-inch instrument cluster, powered and ventilated front seats, a panoramic roof, 64-colour ambient lighting, six airbags, and ADAS with 17 functions covering AEB, lane-keep assist, and blind-spot monitoring.
Pricing is the big unknown. In Indonesia, it launched from the equivalent of roughly RM63,000. Thailand was a touch higher at around RM71,000 for the base variant.
Whether Malaysia lands in that range or above it remains to be seen, but the petrol J5 here is priced at RM108,000.
