Volvo Cars unveiled the EX60 Cross Country on the same day it revealed the all-electric EX60, giving buyers a first look at a more rugged version of its new mid-size SUV.

Volvo said the Cross Country keeps the main EX60 package, including long range, fast charging and the latest safety and convenience tech, but adds the brand’s familiar Cross Country touches.

The first Cross Country model arrived in 1997, and the badge has usually meant a tougher look and a bit more ground clearance for rougher roads.

“The EX60 Cross Country is the EX60 for anyone with a ‘go anywhere’ attitude,” said Volvo Cars chief commercial officer Erik Severinson.

“Built to do more and see more, the EX60 Cross Country embodies not only the sense of exploration but also a reflection of achievement. We basically invented this segment and we felt the EX60 was the perfect next Volvo to get the Cross Country treatment.”

Visually, Volvo gave the car an exclusive paint colour called Frost Green. It also gets Cross Country wheels, Cross Country branding on the bumpers and D-pillar, brushed stainless-steel skid plates, and wider wheel arches.

The changes are not only for show, Volvo said.

Compared with the EX60, the Cross Country sits 20mm higher off the ground. With air suspension, drivers can raise it by another 20mm when needed. The same system can also lower the car to help efficiency and stability at higher speeds, which Volvo said can be useful on highways when trying to stretch range.

The EX60 Cross Country is open for pre-orders in selected European markets, with more markets expected later this year.

Volvo said customers can pick between two all-wheel-drive versions: a P10 AWD Electric with up to 640km of range on the WLTP test cycle, which arrives first, followed by a P12 AWD Electric with longer range (Volvo didn’t specify the figure, possibly because it’s still a work in progress).

Volvo added that features can vary by market and variant, and that the range figure is preliminary and will depend on conditions and driving style.
