Volvo Cars has appointed Thomas Ingenlath as chief design officer, effective Feb 1, bringing back the designer who helped define the brand’s modern Scandinavian look.
Ingenlath will join Volvo Cars’ executive management team and will lead the company’s global design organisation across its product portfolio, Volvo said.
“I am delighted to be returning to Volvo Cars. Design is fundamental to what Volvo stands for. I look forward to working closely with the teams across the company, developing cars that are distinct, relevant and true to the Volvo brand,” Ingenlath said.
He previously served as senior vice president design at Volvo Cars, where he played a central role in shaping its contemporary design identity and in elevating design as a core brand differentiator.
More recently, he led Polestar as chief executive officer, steering the creation of an electrified performance marque and translating design-led concepts into production vehicles.
Volvo Cars chief executive officer Håkan Samuelsson said design remains one of the company’s key strengths as it pushes deeper into premium electric mobility.
“Thomas Ingenlath will strengthen our design leadership with his proven experience and vision, ensuring we continue to design cars that reflect our values and resonate with customers around the world,” he said.
Volvo also thanked Nicholas Gronenthal, who served as interim head of global design, and said he will take on a new role as head of design Americas.
The appointment comes as Volvo pointed to its latest full-year performance.
For 2024, Volvo Car Group recorded a core operating profit of SEK27 billion, with revenue of SEK400.2 billion and global sales of 763,389 cars, all described as record results.
