Mercedes-Benz Malaysia today launched the all-new G 580 EQ Technology, the marque’s first fully electric iteration of the legendary G-Class, with on-the-road prices (excluding insurance) starting at RM 958,888 — wallbox and installation included.

The limited-run Edition One model carries a price tag of RM 998,888, underscoring Mercedes-Benz’s bold step towards electrification.

The launch came in the wake of a preview of the electric G-Class two weeks ago.

While the electric G-Class retains its iconic, angular silhouette and signature detailing, it seamlessly integrates advanced electric drivetrain technology to elevate both on-road refinement and off-road ruggedness.

The electric G-Class represents the fusion of tradition and progress, retaining its iconic angular silhouette and distinctive design elements that have defined the model for generations.

The vehicle maintains its rugged character whilst introducing cutting-edge electric technology that enhances both on-road performance and off-road capability.

Four individually controlled electric motors, positioned close to each wheel, power the G 580. Each motor develops a peak output of 108 kW, combining for a maximum total output of 432 kW and delivering 1,164 Nm of torque.

This innovative individual-wheel drive system enables the vehicle to accelerate from 0 to 100kph in 4.7 seconds, with electronically limited top speed of 180kph.

The electric drivetrain uses torque vectoring to generate virtual differential locks, precisely metering torque to each wheel within fractions of a second.

This technology provides maximum traction and flexibility without cornering distortion, eliminating the need for manual differential lock engagement. The system operates fully automatically through cooperation with ESP and central powertrain control.

A two-tiered lithium-ion battery with 216 cells installed in 12 modules delivers 116 kWh of usable capacity. The battery is integrated into the reinforced steel ladder frame, ensuring a low centre of gravity and increased vehicle rigidity. Protected by a torsion-resistant casing against water and dirt intrusion, the battery enables a WLTP range of up to 473 kilometres.

Charging capability includes both alternating current at up to 11 kW and direct current fast charging at up to 200 kW. DC fast charging from 10 to 80 per cent state of charge requires approximately 32 minutes.

Three charging programmes – Standard, Work, and Home – allow users to set parameters including departure time, climate control, and maximum charge level, with location-based activation for Home and Work programmes.

The recuperative drive system converts kinetic energy into electrical energy during coasting and braking. Five recuperation levels, including D Auto, D+, D, D-, and D–, can be manually adjusted using steering wheel shift paddles in drive setting D.

Off-road capabilities match or exceed conventional G-Class models, with the electric version achieving superior fording depth. The vehicle manages up to 100 per cent gradeability on suitable surfaces, ground clearance of at least 250mm between axles, and maximum fording depth of 850mm for water and mud.

It maintains stable driving on sideward slopes up to 35 degrees, with approach angle of 32 degrees, departure angle of 30.7 degrees, and breakover angle of 20.3 degrees.

Exclusive off-road functions include G-Turn, enabling the vehicle to rotate almost on the spot through opposite wheel rotation on unpaved or loose surfaces.

G-Steering significantly reduces turning circle through targeted drive torque control at individual wheels, eliminating the need for multi-point turns in tight spaces. Both functions operate only on loose or soft surfaces and are restricted from public road use.

Electric Dynamic Select adjusts vehicle characteristics through Comfort, Sport, and Individual on-road driving programmes, plus Trail and Rock off-road modes.

The Comfort programme primarily drives one axle for optimum energy consumption. A switchable Low Range off-road gear reduction provides a 2:1 reduction ratio in Rock mode, increasing drive torque and optimising handling for difficult terrain whilst restricting top speed to 85kph.

The underbody protection employs an intelligent material mix including carbon, increasing rigidity compared to steel or aluminium alternatives whilst providing corrosion protection and weight savings.

The 26mm-thick underbody panel weighs 57.6kg and attaches to the ladder frame with over 50 steel screws, approximately three times lighter than comparable steel components.

Safety features include a multi-stage high-voltage protection concept with eight essential elements, including a self-monitoring system that automatically switches off during serious collisions.

The ECO Assistant analyses navigation data to adapt driving style economically, recognising upcoming events and calculating optimum speeds to minimise energy consumption and maximise recuperation.

The Edition One special model is offered in three MANUFAKTUR matt finishes—South Sea Blue, Opalite White and Classic Grey—and features a blue-trimmed protective moulding insert and matching blue-painted brake callipers with Mercedes-Benz branding. Its MANUFAKTUR Logo Package includes black door handles embossed with the iconic “G” and a “G – STRONGER THAN TIME” mirror projection upon entry. Exterior details continue with matt-black mirror housings, running boards and other trim.

Inside, the cabin is trimmed in silver-pearl and black nappa leather, with MANUFAKTUR leather grab handles. A three-twin-spoke multifunction sports steering wheel in nappa leather features blue topstitching and touch-control panels. Blue carbon-fibre trim elements throughout the dash and door cards echo the exterior accents, while black AMG floor mats with contrasting blue stitching complete the look. Every detail underscores the Edition One’s blend of bespoke craftsmanship and masculine design.

Mercedes-Benz Malaysia marketing and sales vice president Nadia Trimmel said the G 580 “brings together cutting-edge features like G-Turn, G-Steering, and a range of up to 473km according to WLTP, all whilst keeping the iconic DNA of the G-Class.”
