Tan Chong Motor Holdings Bhd has announced the launch of the TQ Wuling brand in Malaysia through a partnership with Chinese automotive firm SAIC GM Wuling Automobile Co Ltd (SGMW).
The collaboration was witnessed by Transport Minister Anthony Loke.
The alliance brings together Tan Chong Motor Group’s manufacturing expertise and distribution network with SGMW’s vehicle technologies. SGMW produces electric cars, plug-in hybrids, internal combustion models, people-movers and commercial vehicles.
Tan Chong Motor Group chief executive officer Daniel Ho signed the partnership agreement alongside PT SGMW Motor Indonesia president Tang Wensheng and SGMW commercial director of overseas business and engineering centre Sun Dazhi.
The first TQ Wuling model will be the Bingo EV, a compact electric vehicle designed for urban commuting. Scheduled to launch in the fourth quarter of 2025, the car will be priced below RM100,000 to make electric vehicle ownership more accessible.
Ho said the brand aims to position itself as preferred choice for value-driven and urban drivers.
The TQ Wuling Bingo will be locally assembled at Tan Chong Motor Group’s production facility in Segambut. The plant has produced over one million vehicles since it was set up nearly 50 years ago.
The company plans to use Malaysian-sourced components to enhance supply chain efficiency and reduce production costs. Initially, production will focus on domestic consumption with potential for exports.
Tang Wensheng said SGM Wuling has always focused on building practical and affordable vehicles. “The partnership allows us to bring our EV technology to Malaysia with confidence,” he said, noting that the ASEAN region is key to SGM Wuling’s strategic plan, particularly Indonesia, Thailand and Malaysia.
Tan Chong Motor Group will handle nationwide distribution, establish aftersales networks and manage local assembly operations for the TQ Wuling brand.
It is also working with government bodies and infrastructure partners to expand EV charging networks.
