Maserati has cancelled plans to develop an electric variant of its MC20 sports car following poor market demand, Reuters reports.
The MC20 Folgore, designed to be a flagship electric model within Maserati’s emerging lineup – including the GranTurismo, Grecale and GranCabrio Folgore variants – boasted three electric motors generating 700hp.
Despite its impressive performance credentials, market research indicated that supercar customers still favour traditional internal combustion engines. Feedback from prospective buyers revealed a marked preference for powerful petrol engines over battery electric vehicles.
With the cancellation of the MC20 Folgore, Maserati will focus on further enhancing the combustion-engine version of the MC20, which already features a 3.0-litre V-6 engine delivering 621hp.
The brand is exploring plans to further increase output, as seen in the GT2 Stradale variant, with an anticipated boost of up to 10hp. This decision represents a strategic pivot for the marque, already under financial strain following a significant US$1.6 billion write-off by parent company Stellantis, largely linked to EV development.
The cancellation move comes as the company reassesses its broader electrification strategy amid shifting consumer preferences and mounting financial pressures.
