The Porsche Taycan has done it again. Not satisfied with having its first electric sports car achieved three feats previously, Porsche has charted a new record for the longest continuous vehicle drift on ice by an electric vehicle.
It secured a Guinness World Records title for the longest continuous vehicle drift on ice by an electric vehicle. On Jan 14, at the Porsche Arctic Center in Levi, Finland, instructor Jens Richter completed 132 laps in a Taycan GTS, covering 17.503km in 46 minutes. The feat surpasses the previous record of 14.809km.
The record attempt initially faced challenges due to ice track deterioration, forcing an early stop after 11km. The team adjusted by switching to shorter tyre spikes and resumed the attempt at night, when dropping temperatures improved conditions. The successful run relied solely on throttle and steering adjustments to maintain a controlled drift.
Commercially available Michelin tyres with one-millimetre spikes were mounted on the Taycan GTS, and a professional GPS system monitored the drift’s precision.
The system recorded data on distance, steering inputs, throttle use, and G-forces. Carl Saville, an official adjudicator from Guinness World Records, verified the achievement and presented the certificate to driver Richter and Christian Lehwald, managing director of the Porsche Arctic Center.
This achievement marks the Taycan’s fourth Guinness World Records title.
In 2023, the Taycan Cross Turismo set a record for the greatest altitude change by an electric car along the Xinjiang-Tibet route. In 2021, a Taycan reached 165.1kph in an enclosed building, and in 2020, it completed a 42.171-km continuous drift on a dry surface at the Hockenheimring.
