Mercedes-Benz and Google Cloud have expanded their partnership to enhance the MBUX Virtual Assistant with conversational capabilities powered by Google Cloud’s Automotive AI Agent.
Built using Google’s Gemini models on Vertex AI, the system is optimised for the automotive sector and integrates Google Maps Platform to deliver personalised, real-time navigation and search features.
The upgraded MBUX Assistant will debut with the new Mercedes-Benz CLA series later this year, marking the first vehicle to use the Mercedes-Benz Operating System (MB.OS).
The AI Agent enables users to engage in natural, multi-turn dialogues, allowing the assistant to provide detailed information on navigation and points of interest, such as restaurant recommendations, reviews, and specialities.
Google Maps’ near-real-time updates ensure accurate data for over 250 million locations worldwide. Drivers and passengers can use voice commands to access comprehensive, personalised information displayed on the vehicle’s interface.
The assistant retains memory throughout conversations, enhancing usability and continuity during drives.
Mercedes-Benz CEO Ola Källenius pointed out the integration was part of the company’s move to deliver exceptional digital experiences, while Google CEO Sundar Pichai spoke of the transformative potential of AI in enhancing in-car interactions.
The partnership reflects a broader shift towards integrating generative AI and large language models into the automotive industry, offering automakers advanced tools to create customised voice-assistant experiences.
Following the CLA launch, the enhanced MBUX system is expected to roll out across additional Mercedes-Benz models.
